Find strengths. Use tech to assist. Learn how they learn and retain info best.(John Soldate)

Math

I encourage them to use prior knowledge as well as current learning to work together to complete assignments in a timely matter.

Encourage the CAS workshops, email reminders, study groups, SI, tutoring

I try to show students the important information, how to study for tests, give them examples they will see again to know they don't have to waste time on unnecessary items.  I encourage them to DO THE WORK!

I give students deadlines, correct homework and tests/quizzes in a timely fashion so as to give immediate feedback.  I offer students the opportunity to come to office hours to get individual help and feedback.I like to have students move around and interact with each other, to give them a chance to see how others think about mathematics and use their knowledge to help others.(Rita Nutsch)

After I teach a class, I give them a quiz, which is really an assignment that they can work on together. I find that students start helping each other and by doing so everyone improves. Giving them an open book quiz that they can work on together I have found is the best way to learn math concepts. Everyone is engaged. I can do ten problems on the board, but until they have to work on a problem themselves, they don't really learn the material. (Despina Gurlides)

Occasionally, I have students work in groups. They are encouraged to work problems, compare answers, and agree on a solution by listening to what others have done to reach an answer.

I am abundantly clear about what I am looking for from quizzes and exams. I give practice exams which are far longer and more difficult than the exams. We all work very hard together to solve the problems. (Rick Danner)

I assign homework that requires them to solve a variety of problems, from basic skill demonstration to more in-depth applications. I try to find examples that tie into their majors.

I talk about different problem solving strategies such as drawing a picture, looking for a pattern, using a variable, guessing & checking methods, among many others. I make them think about the four principles of problem solving according to a Hungarian mathematician George Polya. 1) Understand the problem, 2) search for a plan (strategy), 3) work it out, 5) look back.  (Sanjay Dev)
