BC Art Gallery Presents New Work

The Butte College Art Gallery presents New Work, an exhibition of artworks in various media by faculty, staff and techs in the Butte College Art Department. The exhibition begins Monday, August 24 through Thursday, September 17. A gallery reception will take place on Thursday, Aug. 27, from 4--6 p.m.. Nancy Meyer, Art Department Gallery Manager, will provide an informal gallery talk at 4:30 p.m. Refreshments will be served and a 7-person ensemble called One-Eared Mouse (OEM) will provide music from 5-- 6 p.m. The exhibition and reception are free and open to the public.

The exhibit will feature faculty, staff, and techs representing various art disciplines offered at Butte College. With the start of a new semester, student artists want to see their instructors' artwork and know what we do. Exhibiting artwork provides a model for a professional career in the arts as an attainable goal for students. The exhibit, New Works, is a celebration and statement that artist-teachers came into the field of teaching through an interest in art or art production. The shared view espoused by many key researchers in the field of art theorize that the teachers' ongoing creation of art is a key characteristic of strong, creative teaching. The creative nature of the artist demands that the artist-educator remain active in producing art. Producing art provides a better understanding of how to make art, study art, stay current in contemporary art, and teach art, which in turn benefits students.

Many skills that teachers expect from their students come out to play in their creative endeavors: divergent problem solving, taking risks, looking beyond ones own boundaries and following through with production. In other words, artistic productivity is not only compatible with good teaching, but that the two reinforce each other. The artist-teacher is an embrace of the studio thinking process in the classroom.

This exhibition will acquaint students and the public with the offerings of the Butte College Art Department. The Butte College Art Gallery is located on the first floor of the Arts Building on the main campus of Butte College closest to parking lot 3. Gallery hours are Monday/Tuesday, 9 - 12; and Wednesday/Thursday from 1 - 3 p.m. or by appointment.
