BUTTE VALLEY - Butte-Glenn Community College President Samia Yaqub announced today that the college was awarded two new grants to help students through at least the 2024-2025 school year. The new TRIO Student Support Services Programs (SSS) are designed to help more low-income, first generation and disabled students be successful while attending Butte and assist those who wish to transfer to a four-year college or university.
The new programs will provide goal setting, academic monitoring, advising, financial literacy as well as assistance with career planning, financial aid, scholarships and transfer preparation.
“We are very honored and excited to receive these two highly competitive grants,” said Yaqub. “These programs will provide new resources and allow us to build upon our tradition of serving and supporting students on their path to success. The TRIO Programs have a long history nationwide of being some of the most effective intervention strategies for college success and completion and we’re glad to now be one of the participating colleges.”
The funding from the U.S. Department of Education, which combined equals $523,776 for the coming academic year or $2.6 million over the five-year period. The grants will support 240 students each year with 140 students participating in a “Classic” SSS program and an additional 100 participating in a program tailored to meet the needs of disabled students.
Implementation of the new programs will begin starting September 1 and students can expect to hear how they can get involved during the upcoming semester.
